About

Jeanne Haffner is a curator, writer and historian whose work bridges the historical and the contemporary.

Jeanne Haffner, Ph.D., is the chief curator and interim director of WindScape Brooklyn, New York’s first offshore wind learning center. She is passionate about developing exhibitions and learning centers that evoke a sense of place and landscape — whether exploring the history of modern dance, energy infrastructure, or tree science.

Previously, Jeanne served as the director and chief curator of the Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center, which was honored with nine awards and featured in a 2023 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. Other roles include senior curator at Thinc Design and co-curator of the Hudson Rising exhibition at the New-York Historical Society. In addition to her curatorial work, she has authored two books: Landscapes of Housing: Design and Planning in the History of Environmental Thought (Routledge, 2021) and The View from Above: The Science of Social Space (MIT Press, 2013). Jeanne has also taught urban studies, sustainable development, and environmental history at Harvard, Brown, and Hofstra Universities and won a teaching award at Harvard in 2013.

At the Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center, Jeanne oversaw the funding and development of two audio tours, a teacher’s academy, a traveling exhibition with the Shinnecock Indian Nation, and a 300-plus page high school curriculum titled Energy & Us. This center was the first in the New York State Parks system to include Braille, Spanish, and simplified Chinese translations and inclusive design features such as tactile panels. While at New York State Parks, Jeanne created a Long Island Water Atlas, now on view at Hempstead Lake State Park, and curated an exhibition on tree science at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum.
